Choosing a Metal Detector for your son or daughter is important. You want to give them a detector that will let them enjoy metal detecting, find great stuff, and last a long time.
One of the first things to consider is the height and age of your child.
Youngsters (aged 5+, height up to 150cm)
These detectors are shorter than a full length detector and a lot lighter, making them easier to use for smaller arms and hands.
They also have simpler controls which allows easy use. They are sensitive units and are very good at detecting metal objects so you should have no problems at all finding lots of interesting things at home, the park, the beach or out camping.
If your child enjoys the hobby you can consider upgrading to a better detector once they are tall enough.
Older children/teens (150cm and taller)
In this range you can spend approximately $200 (or much higher if you prefer).
A great entry level detector with very good ability is the Bounty Hunter Tracker IV. (a full size detector) or the VLF (which is great for teens). All of our detectors have a shaft that is adjustable for length, so they can be shortened for younger users, and lengthened as they get older.
Bounty Hunter detectors are also fairly lightweight in construction, without heavy battery packs of large electronic units so they are generally easy to swing and use.
If your child is in the middle of these 2 groups, we would recommend going for a full size entry level detector as it will provide them more enjoyment over the longer term and they won't need an upgrade as they get older.
